Stylish Blogger Award

My thanks go to the lovely Sarah who passed on the Stylish Blogger Award to me.

First, I have to say that there is no one less deserving of a ‘stylish’ award: I spend my days kicking around in a jeans and a jumper or jumper AND cardigan (depending on whether it is a Scottish summer or winter) with nary a thought of style. My daughter is the stylish one in the family. She is always turned out beautifully and hardly ever wears trousers. In fact, the poodles probably have a better sense of style than I do.  For me making an effort means matching socks.

Still, I accept the award on behalf of my blog which is always better turned out than me. But, with great style comes great responsibility and I have to tell you ten things about me that you don’t already know. This is tricky. I think the only thing you don’t know about me now is where the bodies are buried… Still, I’ll give it my best shot.

  1. I have never drunk tequila. Despite all the banter on twitter, I’m not a big drinker. I like some wine and a beer or two, but that’s about it. Although a midouri and lemonade is nice. Oh, and Archers and lemonade. And a Pina Colada is awfully nice. Brandy after dinner? Well, if you twist my arm. But I’m not much of a drinker.
  2. I’m allergic to cats. This may come as a surprise after my post about my cats – well, cats and male strippers, but I am now terribly allergic to the feline species. It all started after I had my daughter. Pregnancy buggered up my immune system and I am now allergic to cats, horses, dust, nickel, latex, elastoplasts (bandaids), aspirin, ibuprofen and pretty much anything with salicylic acid. As well as wheezing I get severe urticaria – the only place I’ve never had a hive is the sole of my foot. I take a high strength antihistamine every day. Sometimes two and, occasionally, even three doesn’t stop it.
  3. My favourite movie is Blade Runner. The speech Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) makes at the end never fails to start the tears flowing. I even had part of it etched on my ipod and my husband and I have spent many a happy evening discussing the finer points of the plot and how it differs from Phillip K Dick’s Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep. It’s Hubby’s favourite film too.
  4. I take a size 7 shoe. Yes, I know, exciting stuff.
  5. I have a larger than normal head. Stop sniggering, I’m being serious here. I’m built to a different scale from most women and it is nigh on impossible to buy a hat. I try on a beret and it sits atop my gigantic cranium like a pea on a dumpling (Scottish saying). And I have had to accept that there is no Alice band manufactured that will fit around my skull without starting a pressure-induced migraine within five minutes. My excuse is that I have an enormous brain…
  6. …and to prove it, I was a card carrying member of Mensa in my youth. Indeed, my IQ is bigger than my shoe size. When last measured it was 161. Bet that surprises you. Of course, the fact that when a I was a student I volunteered for every psych experiment to earn a few extra quid and that most of those included an IQ test and I got loads and loads of practice doing them – well, that’s neither here nor there, is it?
  7. When I was a kid I never took my dolls to bed with me because I thought they might come to life during the night and murder me in my sleep. Don’t laugh – you believed in Santa Clause, right?
  8. I can wriggle my left ear and give the Vulcan salute. Those are my party pieces. I don’t go to many parties.
  9. I can’t abide marzipan. Honestly, if I had to eat it I’d hurl. The smell alone makes me bilious.
  10. On the odd occasion when I’ve seen someone famous in real life, I forget I don’t actually know them and invariably say hello. I am an embarrassment to my family.

So, there you have it: 10 boring interesting things you never knew about me.

I pass this award on to:-

Gill Fraser Lee – a lovely lady and big Jeremy Northam fan

Sarah Callejo – a fabulous writer and lovely Spanish lady

Clare Kirkpatrick – breast-feeding guru, writer and all round fab person who now blogs for Myslexia

Tamsin Jupp – a fine, talented writer and another twitter friend.

Nettie, gosh, thanks so much! Stylish? Perhaps by association with the uber-stylish object of my admiration, but certainly not in my own right. Blog post to follow … it will be tweeted!

Wow! I am so not stylish either 😀 But the ’round person’ is fairly apt right now 😀

Also, my mum has a big head too – can never find hats to fit her!

Nettie, I’m amazed! So quick. It took me about four months!!

My friend is a journalist for the BBC. She told me that a lot of people recognise her, and say hello. Her face being so familiar, they just assume they know her from somewhere.

I can’t stand marzipan either – disgusting stuff!! And it’s quite popular here…

    Great post!
